The weather is changing, and we all know someone that can tell you the weather forecast because their pain has already started. But why do your joints hurt when the weather changes?
There is no significant evidence yet to explain why your joints hurt when the weather changes. But one of the leading theories for this phenomenon is the change of the barometric pressure is affecting the joints.
When there is a notable weather change there is an atmospheric pressure change. We refer to it as good weather when there is high pressure system and bad weather when there is a low-pressure system(2). During bad weather the lower air pressure surrounding the body can allow for tendons, muscles and other tissues around joint to expand. This places pressure on joints, which can lead to pain(3).
Another reason as to why joints become painful when the weather changes, is that on cold and damp days you don’t move as much. As people tend to stay indoors when there is bad weather this can cause joints to become stiff and painful(3).
